It's the same thing mechanically. You can allow a player to recharge their focus (for free with their HP or paying for it just like components) or not. If you do, does it just go inert when the d4 is stepped down, or does it crumble to dust? The latter could introduce interesting choices in dire situations...
In guillaume jentey's game, there is a demon familiar who acts as focus for its master. We call its dR 'hit points', and I reckon it would be sent back to Hell if it was drained entirely.
