The current resting rule requires a CON check before characters can recover one hit die worth of HP.

The current resting rule requires a CON check before characters can recover one hit die worth of HP. This check can be made with advantage or disadvantage, depending on campsite quality.
In a game earlier tonight, it occurred to me that I could just apply adv/dis to the HD roll, bypassing the CON check entirely. It's simpler, but it downplays the importance of Constitution, a stat that doesn't get much use.
What say you?

  1. I like it. It ensures that characters receive at least 1 additional hit point after resting. It's a bit less gritty than the existing rule, but I'm a softie like that. ;-)

  2. Merge Con and Str into Phy(sique)

  3. AMHA, Less roll are the best way to deal with a rule.
No stat check for HD recover. No roll is better.
CON or STR will only help fighter class to recover faster.

The 3 states (Adv/n-a/dis) are enough to manage how efficient the recover is. Gives also a large panel of GM excuses to provide one or not (bad injuries, camp quality, weather, poison, curse, bond, food quality... ).

  4. I am a big (not fat !) fan of the "less roll" way.
So for me the HD roll (with adv or dis) for resting time is enough.
But I also a big (not tall) fan of the stats because they describe the character.
Con is maybe the less useful stat but I find it very important : we have the reroll HP rule, we can use Con to resist to poison, illness, exhaustion...
And if we have a difference between Int and Wis, I like to have a difference between Str and Con.
For exemple a fat (not big) man can have a good Con but a small Str and someone with a good Str but a small Con can be a big warrior with a "talon d'Achille" or a low stamina...

So, I think in my games I will use the only HD roll for resting times but I keep Con stat !

  6. It can definitely work. I need to devise new uses for CON. Eric Nieudan, i seem to remember that you want to preserve the Basic Six.

(I got a heretical thought that one might combine it with WIS and call it RESolve).

  7. Fiddling with the stats is a can of worms I don't want to open - and I like my compatibility =)
I suppose CON is useful for a few things already. It's also the check you make to avoid dying when at 0 HP. So yeah, I think I'll make the change.

  8. And Con is the stat you used when your crazy goblin want to use his head in a digging contest with enchanted picks... It was yesterday evening and my crazy goblin finished stunned but happy..

  9. I'd suggest letting the Con check determine if you get adv. on the HD roll, but I'm late to the discussion...

  10. Robbert Raets That's an idea. I was thinking of letting a CON check decide in edge cases.
