How badly do things break if I roll risk dice like TBH rolls usage dice: drop a die size on a 1-2?

  1. Not that it doesn't warrant even more discussion, but I thought I would share what has already been said. :)

  2. Looking at that table the MM d12r is equivalent to the Black Hack Usage d8, the d10r and the d8r are either side of the usage d6 and the d6r is the same as the usage d4. So the easier comparison between the to systems would be to say that where TBH uses d12/d10/d8/d6/d4, MM uses d8/d6+/d6-/d4/d3-. It helps me see the difference anyway. :-)

  3. Thanks for digging up that post Ray Otus!
Brett Slocum I don't think anything would break. Off the top of my head, I'd say adventures would become slightly safer: resources more reliable, dark forests less dangerous, and murder hobos a bit more financially stable. I think it's worth a try if that suits your game.

  4. I guess my problem is that things last much less time than 'normal' for D&D. dR6 torches last 33 minutes not an hour. dR6 food lasts 3 days instead of 5.

  5. Yeah, it's a dial Brett Slocum. 1-2 puts more focus on resources because they are less reliable. MM needs 1-3 because it use the risk die a lot! But TBH suggests using risk/usage dice more sparingly and so draws attention to fewer things ( but those few things break more easily). There's no right/wrong, only preference.

  6. Brett Slocum I don't think dR6 rations are equivalent to five days rations in another system. Remember a 'slot' of food (or anything else) can be up to dR12. That's over 13 days of food in your backpack!

  7. Also you make people roll their torches dR every ten minutes? And they keep showing up to your games? Is there free beer or something? ;p

  8. You don't have beer? And pizza? How do you get people to show up? :-O

dR6 of food averages to 3 days. d6 usage die of food averages to 5 days. There's a table of those averages for usage dice in the TBH GM screen.

Sure you can adjust how often you roll a risk die to approximate a usage die (or the normal OD&D/BX timings of things), but then all your talk about making it more dangerous goes out the window.

  9. In the end, it's up to personal preference. My preference is to approximate the OD&D/BX timings of torches, food, and other expendables.

  10. I run online games almost exclusively. So I get to keep all the pizza =)

My approach with torches is more liberal (every hour or so - which is in keeping with B/X in a way). I have players roll food dRs at camp, and once out twice more times a day if they want to heal.

As you said, it's a matter of preference.

  11. I can't get my torches at home to last much longer than an hour, let alone 3. Sounds more like an oil lamp. (BX torches last an hour, lanterns last 4).

  12. I only am getting nitpicky about how long a torch lasts because resource management has long been one of the primary aspects of dungeon- and hex-crawling. Light, food, water, arrows, spells, hit points. Can you bring enough to get out alive? Changing how long stuff lasts changes that aspect of the game. "Oh, we don't need to take more than 3 torches, because we aren't going to be down here more than a few hours." = famous last words.

  13. Hehe, I see what you mean. I might ask for more frequent torch dR rolls from now on =)
