Show us how you've used the Specialist Training option!

Show us how you've used the Specialist Training option!

Here are some I made (but they're untested).

Climbing (D4)
(You may succeed at a leg of a climb without a roll).

Desperate fighting (D4)
(I get advantage on an attack against a superior opponent)

Dragonslayer Strike (D4)
(Do maximum damage on a bold attack with a long blade)

Fan the Hammer! (D4)
(Make two attacks with a revolver)

I Do My Best Work In The Dark (D4)
(Advantage on a roll when I’m operating after civil twilight)

One-Two Punch (D4)
May hit twice (using one roll) with bare hands. Each attack does D6 damage (bare-hand attacks normally do D3 damage).

Parkour (D4)
(You may make a seemingly impossible jump)

Strength of Spirit (D4)
(I may add my Source of Strength to a roll)

Superior Cognition (D4)
(I may use my INT in place of another stat)

  1. Sooo how do they work? When do you recover the die?

  2. Depends on in-game time a bit I think. Once per session, or once per 'long rest'.

  3. Once per day or session, you can tell if someone is lying or telling the truth. (Or d4 usage die per day?)

Once per hour during combat, if they hit with an unarmed attack, they can hit critically. (d4)

Once per hour during combat, if they hit with a ranged attack, they can hit crically. (d4)

Once per day, they can give orders in the name of the Empire.

  4. Brett Slocum the risk die automatically takes care of the "X times per". You just trigger the recovery

  5. Paolo Greco It's either or I think. That said I am yet unconvinced of the stability of dRs for specialist abilities at higher levels. If anyone uses this rule on a regular basis, I'd like to hear about it...

Tore Nielsen These are all very good! Except maybe I Do My Best Work In The Dark: getting advantage on a roll when operating after civil twilight sounds more like a trait to me.

I'd have loads to share, but unfortunately the Goddess of Eastern Blizzards has decided that I should be working on late projects at the moment...

  6. Eric Nieudan I think you're right. How would you like a blanket statement like:
(I am unaffected by normal darkness)?

  7. Tore Nielsen Again, it sounds more like a trait to me. That's something you'd get with a race for example.

For an ability, I'd go with No one can see me when I'm in the dark or even Ask Lady Night for a favour.

  8. Paolo Greco Since the version of MM I'm using says once per day, I use once per day, but since the risk die was what started this, I stated both.

  9. I'm sorry Tore Nielsen I totally forget to answer to this interesting post !
These are some specialist training skills I created for characters I made (PCs or pregens)
I had a red pyromaniac goblin who had :
    - BUUURNNNN !!!! (that allows him to crate a big big fire or explosion)
then she (because she was a woman gob who was desguised in male to become pyromaniac...) became craftwoman and slave of a stone golem and had :
    - woodcraft
    - repair golem (a kind of healing on the golems)

I created a sneaky rat who had :
    - runaway (that allows him to avoid damages by dodging and running away...)

Eric Nieudan played a street kid (in one of my "long" one shot) who had :
    - disappear without a trace
    - hit where it's very painful
    - give the DeathPlague to someone

I created a dark elf blade dancer with :
    - dance of the blades : during one combat he can fight using DEX instead of STR and fight with a sword in each hand doubling his attacks

  11. Here are more of mine:

Lucky: May turn one failed test into a success or reroll one damage roll 1/day.

Backstab: If attacking from behind or surprise, they can deal critical damage+level.

Hide in Undergrowth: In a natural environment, they can become virtually invisible. 1/day.

Automaton: He has a 2 HD automaton that can fight for him 1 turn/day. Mechanical Artificer can repair damage taken. (This one was taken by a mechanical artificer, who creates magical machines. Automatons were his big thing.)
