For item #4 in chargen where you get to "pick two" from the options, would anyone ever use one of their picks for extra rolls for wealth/weapons/armor? I bet no. Doesn't seem on the same level as the other options.
But maybe there could be an "inheritance" table that included some magic items, items of larger wealth, and minor noble titles or something...
The way I use Macchiato that seems irrelevant (characters don't get to roll for equipment at character creation) but that's still an interesting perspective. Would love to see what such a table might look like.
ReplyDeleteOn a related note, has any MM GM ever seen a player pick "increase a stat below 10 by 1d4" ? I must have seen a good 30 or so characters created since I started my Dungeon, Inc. playtest and no a single player chose that option. What's your experience with this Eric Nieudan?
I've never had it chosen. It could be more attractive if the option allowed for the player to choose perhaps, but it does seem like the option could be made more enticing if there was more of a guarantee of rolling on something that would produce more bang for your buck.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm interested in a response to that as well. I actually like that "increase a stat..." option, and I think people will use it in the hack I'm messing with, but I've cut down to four stats, which means less room for dump stats.
ReplyDeleteBenoît FELTEN ktrey parker I've seen it chose a couple of times. But it may be worth mentioning that the newest draft of the rules gives + 1d6 for a stat of 9 or less. Still risky, but more enticing.
ReplyDeletePaul Czege As you said, I don't think anyone would trade one of their picks for equipment (even for another full set of rolls). But I love the idea of an inheritance table. It would be a great way to kickstart a campaign (and to define the world if the referee is bothered to make their own version). Adding it to the list of things to write in Glasgow next week!
Paul Czege Wait wut, you're actually hacking MM? 0_o
ReplyDeleteWill there be minotaurs?
Humans only is what I'm thinking at this point. You'll have to hack my hack if you want minotaurs :)
ReplyDeletePaul Czege I'm sure I can do that ^^
ReplyDeleteAnd if there's anything I can do to help, you know where to find me!
I have a d100 trinkets table I use for anything Tekumel. You can get anything from a dog to a tubeway car destination disk to a mummified hand of a hluss.
ReplyDeletePaul Czege Paul, keep in touch if you want to do that hack, we can do with more material to support the game. I pay ok royalties.
ReplyDeleteOh, that sounds good, Eric Nieudan! I've never had a player choose the D4, but I considered house-ruling it so that thayer could put the points where they wanted (provided no stat got higher than 18). Then, I'm a big softie.
ReplyDeleteI think I might trade a pick for another d20 roll btw. or at least consider it.
Tore Nielsen Add it anywhere seems dangerous to me. I've had a character with a natural 18 in a combat skill and needless to say even with disadvantage the guy virtually never fails.
ReplyDeleteIn my Black Hack hacks, I've shifted to all stats are rolled with 2d6+3, because 3s are completely debilitating and 18s are equally hard to deal with. I like the 5-15 range.
ReplyDeleteMy original rule was to roll 4d4 for each stat. But then nostalgia whacked me on the head =)
ReplyDeleteEither that or 2d6+3 could be an optional rule I suppose.
After playing with both a DX 18 Thief and a couple DX 3 cavemen, I came to my conclusion. 4d4 and 2d6+3 have very close bell curves.
ReplyDeleteBrett Slocum Yup :

Which makes me think if I add an optional rule, I won't bother with 4d4.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone done any calculation on chance of success with and without advantage?

ReplyDeleteAt the middle (11), Advantage is +5 and Disadvantage is -5. At the extremes (3 and 18) Advantage is +2 and Disadvantage is -2.
