  1. I already like what I have read about natural 1's being a critical success. I have a pile of dice that do that all the time.

  2. I think this is the first Macchiato selfie ever!

  3. So, in the spell example, animate metal changes to "rain of blades". That is less vague, so does it cost 1hp less to cast now?

  4. No. The actual spell hasn't changed; the player has a new use for it. She can still do a lot of things with animated metal.
As a ref, you should allow a player to rewrite a spell they aren't happy yet, especially if they're new to the system. But this is not what happens in the example.

  5. Ok, so if the spell does the same damage as a javelin, and uses resources as a melee attack, the benefit of the spell is that the target rolls a dex save instead of the caster rolling dex to hit? Does the spell allow the caster to ignore disadvantage if the target is a higher HD?

  6. Man, you'd have to ask the referee about all that! =)
Seriously, all the details have to be made up and negotiated at the table. If it were me, I'd ignore the disadvantage. And I'd be semi-generous with the number of targets since the spell also consumes arrows.
