Title
Here is a little thing for you survival minded refs. What do you think?
Foraging and hunting
Foraging and hunting takes half a day. Do a WIS check. If it's a pass, roll a d12 on the table below. If the referee thinks the area doesn't have much food to offer, they may ask you to roll a different die.
If the check is a failure, roll the encounter dR both on this table and as the normal procedure (or on the dungeon encounter table if you're using that). Roll only once, but apply both results.
1. You find nothing, but a monster finds you
2. Fresh meat d6... and something still eating it
3. Nothing but tree bark and grubs d4
4. Chestnuts or walnuts d8
5. Squirrels or pigeons d6
6. Snails and leaves d8
7. Apple and pears d6
8. Honey and roots d8
9. Fish and herbs d6
10. Deer meat d10
11. Tasty mushrooms or berries d8
12. Boar meat d6, or roll again twice

Very good.
ReplyDeleteI have a suggestion but it's maybe not a good idea....
If you treat your table as a dR maybe it could be more and more difficult to find something in the area...
And so, the 1 to 3 may be some kind of failure
1- monster (as you write)
2- nothing and you will be tired tomorrow
3- meat but something eating it (as your number 2)
after like you did....
But if the table is a dR with kind of failures in it maybe the Wis roll may not involve succes or failure but advantage or disadvantage for the dR roll.
Or maybe, there is no need to make a Wis roll... just advantage/normal/disadvantage (it depends of the traits of the hunters)
I'm not sure to be clear... I'm not sure to be clever...
As I intended it, the WIS check is to avoid possible monsters encounters, as well as having a better selection of food (since you roll d12 even if the encounter dR is low).
ReplyDeleteGetting advantage to the roll on the table is a good idea. Maybe if a character who didn't do the WIS check, but had a relevant traits, is helping?
And if someone has a hunter spe... he has a automatic succes and directly roll on the table with d12 ?
ReplyDeleteIf he has a nice referee, maybe ;)
ReplyDeletei love this
ReplyDeleteDo youse generally use WIS for sensing and searching stuff?
ReplyDeleteI like the foraging table, yet I feel an urge to pervert it. :-D
Pervert away!
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, that's my default use for WIS.
