So yesterday evening that was my very-first-ever Macchiato Monsters game, with guillaume jentey ; while Matthieu B was our GM.
Character creation was a bit slow to my tastes. The difficult part was to link the stats (very poor stats, I even had a 5 in CHA) to the equipment and gears I've rolled.
But I've managed to build a "eastern-monkoid herborist", both STRongish and more-than-average WISe. I rolled a "1" for his HP. Sssssssshhhhhhhhhhit.
But still as ugly as this picture looks.
The GM then let us level up to lvl 3. I could add a few points here and there, but still 1 Hit Point. grml.
We had a great adventure that has stopped at 00:30, in a not-so good situation, trapped in an Inn that looks made of ashes, and some vengeful creature that want to add our characters to the bodycount.
The system is really working great, and it's as elegant as one could expect: it serves the story, and doesn't get across the players, and eventually it feeds the narrative.
I think I still have to get the habit to play a completely clueless, helpless and defenseless adventurer, but still having to get his way, as alive as possible.
I've no doubt that it might get easier as I'll drink more Monster Macchiatos.
Sounds like a fun night. Glad the rules worked for you!
ReplyDeleteOut of curiosity, why did you not buy more hit dice with your level ups?
Eric Nieudan At lvl1 I stepped the HD up from d6 to d8. I thought it was enough for it. I've spent my level-up options to increase my stats a bit here and there, and increase my attack number.
ReplyDeleteI think I didn't pay attention to the fact that I could've added a hit dice (I believed that I could step up the dice instead).
We rolled the hits only at the end of the levelling up, so this "1" was probably the result of a bad strategy, combined with my misunderstanding.
But that was challenging and I had to carefully avoid fighting. That's the trick, to be "heroic" without being a hero.
Well, at least you survived! You must have been doing something right :)
ReplyDeleteSean Wills It happened at least during the mass combat near the end of the game. Our group was composed of the 2 PCs and about 8 NPCs. Each time our dR was stepped down, an ally NPC was dying, and the GM was narrating how and why this was this Barbarian's turn, for example.
ReplyDeleteOur randomly-generated possession, also. I wanted to give food to a NPC, but all I had was this jar of snail soup (d6) ; so I had to explain her that it was an old receipe from my far-away-country, and that it might taste funny at first, but that it was good for her. At the end I've rolled my risk dice, which didn't step down, and concluded: "that's right. it's normal not to finish it if it's the first time you have one".
Yes it was a very good moment.
ReplyDeleteEverything, like Bruno Bord said, in the game was counting stories : with a good MC (Matthieu B ) and the MM mecanisms, we could play many unique moments.
so we spend two hours (in real life) playing in the Inn before the "dangerous time" was coming. And these two hours were great and full of interesting playing time.
I know my english is awful... next time I will write in polish !
