Spells: can you buy or find them?

Spells: can you buy or find them?

Do you MM referees allow magically trained characters to acquire new spells by means other than leveling up? Buy them or trade them, find them on scrolls or dead sorcerers' spellbooks, etc.

Thinking about faith and profane magic this morning, and it wouldn't be difficult to have different systems for both.

  1. À mon sens la montée de niveau devrait seulement augmenter le potentiel magique du lanceur. Le joueur devrait faire le nécessaire pour que son personnage obtienne ses sorts.

  2. I think they can be discovered in old texts or the like. If you wanna buy one though I think you have to offer up something better than gold though.

  3. Tore Nielsen Yeah, magic shouldn't be bought with money (except maybe components).

  4. I tinkle with this in the HotU2 hack - I will most certainly go toward more precise and more numerous spells (like I do in the Blunderbuss version of HotU) but no paiement in HP - only the dR as a measure of power...

  5. John Grümph Yeah that's certainly an option. Your game as well as the recent ideas by Cedric and Tore made me think about all this. I might have some more optional rules about the matter in the finished game.

  6. With composants more onerous the mage can use to cast spells instead of his own magic dR. There are lists of spells for Sorcerers and Imperial Priest in Blunderbuss (http://legrumph.org/Terrier/?Jeux-de-role/Blunderbuss---Warhammer - page 21 of the word file) if you want to see the focus of each spell. It's no battle magic or heavy power spells, but numerous utilitary spells a good player can use with profits. The priest have powers granted by the gods (in my Warhammer, all imperial gods come from the Chaos and the powers of the priests are mutations, but of the gentle and useful kind).

  8. Tore Nielsen absolutely. And finding those old books can be part of the next quest, instead of collateral find.

  9. I use the age-old methods of scrolls and spellbooks. Also sharing among similar mage types.

  10. you can
    - find them by uncovering one of the Laws of Reality
    - find them by going deep into the radiant depths of Mana Tar
    - research them spending time and money and research resources
    - steal them and use other casters' spell books as resources for research

  11. What about making deals for spells, like doing favors for demons, angels, and fae in exchange for the ability to summon them?

  12. These could all work, thanks for the ideas all!
Furthermore, I'm realising all these methods could both work as leveling up, and for acquiring spells externally.
