One thing I learned from Macchiato Monsters chargen Friday is the steps are out of order in the text.

One thing I learned from Macchiato Monsters chargen Friday is the steps are out of order in the text. If you're going to roll random equipment, and stats are rolled with just a small choice of swapping two, you can't do the stats first, then traits and stuff before equipment or you get a mess. You need to roll equipment first and then stats and only then do the other things that are choices so the character can be a more coherent reflection of the stuff you rolled randomly.

  1. I'm not sure to understand why we'll get a mess...

  2. Because if you choose the trait "Pistolero" and roll no gun, it's kind of sad.

  3. Pierre M Not to be flippant, because you're raising a valid point, but it could just as well mean that your first goal is "Hunt down the bastard who took my guns but left the bullets in my thigh." It would be sad to not have what you need, but I think it becomes incumbent on the group to create an interesting situation where you can obtain it in a reasonable way/time.

I agree that you can get some very dissonant stuff, or end up under-equipped and possibly desperate, but I like the way it randomizes your starting situation. The boxed text with character generation calls out rolling equipment first to help give shape to the character, but some of my favorite characters were woefully ill prepared, or had just what we needed because of their unlucky rolls.

  4. John Dornberger said it all, but to be clear: I like messes. Quirky characters who start their career a ways from peak efficiency are my jam.

  6. If you like characters that start their career close to peak efficiency, I recommend Mageblade!

  7. Since the option to roll equipment first is given, I think there's no need to change the order.
